Think about those mysterious Magi seeking after the newly born King of the Jews.
They had special knowledge about past prophecies. They had the ability to match stars with current locations. They had the conviction that their travels over long distances with precious cargo would result in great joy. How did they know all this? Who taught them? Who motivated them to embrace these extreme measures? This IS a great mystery to us, but a completely rewarding aspect of the Advent story. What does it tell us? Foreign dignitaries were moved by their convictions to worship the Redeemer of Israel. It almost seems to be the case that they expected EVERYONE to have the same devotions as they… "We saw his star! Didn't you?" "We have gifts for him! Where are yours?" "We have come from a great distance -- do you not know what is happening in your own backyard?" It is fitting that the true King of the world would be embraced by others of the world. It is also regrettable that the very King of the Jews was rejected by his own (but not by all!) We know this today. We now possess special knowledge and tools to help us understand, apply, and proclaim this message to the world! And even though technology can assist us in making world-wide impact, the most important thing we need is what those Magi had: God's word, and God's Spirit, and God's direction -- leading, convicting, and converting hearts to love and worship the True King of the Universe… They say wise men still seek him -- but wise by God's word and Spirit. Keep seeking!
